Capshine : An english learning app

How we iterated multiple times and designed Sulekha’s practice driven english learning experience

Iteration 1

We researched to find out nuanced user needs when searching for teachers, and designed an experience to deliver them.

How it started

During the covid pandemic, Sulekha saw a surge in queries for language teachers and decided to build a dedicated marketplace.

How it started

During the covid pandemic, Sulekha a leading classified's company saw a surge in queries for language teachers and decided to build a dedicated marketplace.

Sulekha approached us to design a learning marketplace that matches students needs and teachers.

Version 1

We researched to find out nuanced user needs when searching for teachers, and designed an experience to deliver them.

People started using the app but, this was just the beginning of our relationship with Capshine.

Version 2

The Capshine team realised that the value that can be added and problems to be solved were much greater in the later phase of learning. The product managers came up with a new set of features to address this and each feature came with its own challenge to design.

Design challenge 1 : Scheduling

How do we enable students to practice at a time that works for them?

Scheduling : Live sessions on various topics are conducted by mentors, and students can check the schedule to book the sessions they want to attend. A daily plan is displayed on the first screen, outlining the activities for each day. This allows users to see all available activities related to the topic they are studying. A learning journey is created for each user with a timeline, which enables them to revisit past activities and keep track of their progress.

Design challenge 2 : Presenting personalised feedback

We observed that students found the feedback to be generic element and skipped over it. How do we communicate to them that it's personalised?

Personalised feedback is visually presented with a hand-written feel.

Feedback : In Talk time sessions, a teacher works with small groups of students, giving everyone a chance to speak and ask questions. After the session, the teacher provides individual feedback to each student, making them feel properly guided. We designed the feedback screen with a hand-written feel.

Design challenge 3 :

How do we make sure the user can navigate their way through an ever growing platform?

The Information architecture of the app

Information Architecture : We used card-sorting to build an IA that works for the user group. The platform had too many learning options, which made it overwhelming for users. It was hard to find the right features at the right time, and it didn't provide clear guidance on what to do next. To address this, we separated the daily schedule, learning journey, and quizzes, making it easier for students to access the features they need.

Reviews

It took over a year, but the team's efforts bore fruit. Users were positively reviewing and loving the app.
